Parish Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian

Nestled in the heart of the historical part of Fažana, the Parish Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian stands as a testament to centuries of architectural evolution and religious devotion. This stone structure, originally built in the Paleo-Byzantine style in the 6th century, has undergone numerous transformations, adopting Romanesque, Gothic, and Neoclassical features over time.

Historical Journey of the Church

The church’s foundations date back to the 8th century, evidenced by an altar screen architrave inscribed with: M(a)ΔO(n)AE IRMINO EPISCOP(VS), a reference to the Bishop of Pula. Initially, a Gothic church with a polygonal apse was constructed on this site, featuring a relief-adorned entrance portal depicting SS. Cosmas and Damian, crafted by a local sculptor.

Significant changes came in the 16th century when the original Romanesque church was transformed into a sacristy. Its eastern wall showcases a large fresco of the “Crucified Christ” alongside the patron saints of Fažana, created by unknown Friuli masters. The church achieved its current form in 1688 following extensive reconstruction and expansion. In the 19th century, a presbytery was added, and the facade was revamped in the Neoclassical style. Comprehensive restoration from 1928 to 1932 restored the church’s 1688 appearance.

2. Right Altar: Displays the “Madonna with Child,” St. Andrew, and St. Margaret, painted by Baldassare d’Anna (1572-1646) and his workshop.
3. Left Altar: Showcases “Madonna and Child Enthroned” with SS. Cosmas and Damian, created by an unknown 17th-century master.
4. Left Lateral Altar: Dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, this altar features a linen strip decorated with the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, topped with a depiction of God blessing cherubs. Restored in 2016.
5. Right Lateral Altar: This Neoclassical altar, crafted by Alpine masters, houses a 14th-century Gothic crucifix restored in 2018.
